Palmetto Construction Services recently completed the renovation of Rickenbacker International Airport’s airside animal transport facility.
The $423,000 project revamped the existing facility, which is certified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as both an Export Inspection Facility and a Permanent Port of Embarkation for livestock. Fewer than 50 such facilities exist nationwide, with Rickenbacker being the only one in Ohio.
During the six-month project, Palmetto built a new drainage system, constructed 12 new animal rest stalls, renovated bathrooms and an on-site USDA office, installed a hose bibb, painted the walls and stall doors, applied sealer to the floor and stalls, removed unused overhead pipes, and installed nonstick suspended rubber flooring to ensure safe footing for animals.
“Our self-sufficient, world-class facility benefits all those involved in the animal transport process,” said Joseph R. Nardone, President & CEO of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, which operates the airport. “Our customers can handle the resting and inspection processes in a safe, quiet area that is minutes away from waiting aircraft. Most importantly, the animals are under less stress because they spend less time in transport with fewer stops along the way.”
